“Untitled” Bookwork
20x 30 cm, Paper, thread
2014, Oslo Drawing Bienale
2023, Beyond Home Exhibition, kunstraum kreuzberg, Berlin
“Each time you turn a page of Untitled, 2013 handmade bookwork, you either create or destroy a perfect square. Black cotton thread is simply and precisely sewn into the heavy white pages. As you open the book, fine black lines compose themselves before your eyes into sharp, minimal- ist geometry. Turn the page and the square collapses before it disappears. The next double spread reveals the construction, the neat undersides of the vertical sewn lines. Turn the page again and another, slightly larger square appears. This is the whole narrative of the book, but this reduction serves to distill several powerful ideas and sensations: the awareness of the geometry of the book; the movement of the two-di-mensional pages through the third dimension and also in time; the precision of the square set against its fragility; and the idea of reading or viewing as a creative act that depends on one’s situation in space and time.“
